Doing Laundry in Your RV

When you think of all the exciting journeys you’ll take in your RV, you probably don’t stop to think about how your laundry will get done while you’re traveling. You should always be thinking of new ways to save space while traveling in an RV. One great space saver is to not bring tons and tons of clothing along. If you’re prepared to do laundry in your RV, then you can get away with packing light when it comes to clothes. Doing laundry in an RV isn’t the same as doing laundry at home.

Options

It may seem like your options for doing laundry in an RV would be pretty limited, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are several options for getting laundry done on the road, it’s just a matter of finding what works best for you. Some of the best options are laundromats, portable washing machines, hand washing, washer/dryer units, and doing smaller loads.

Laundromats

If you will only be doing a few loads of laundry on the road, then going to a laundromat is a good option. There isn’t too much planning required for a trip to the laundromat but of course, you’ll need quarters. Laundromats often have change machines available, too. Many newer campgrounds have laundry facilities onsite, so you may not have to venture too far at all. Some truck stops have washers and dryers available to use as well.

Portable Machines

Portable machines are a viable option for smaller loads of laundry. There’s a wide variety of styles and functions available that use different operational methods, so it may take some learning and adjusting. Portable machines are great if you don’t feel like waiting around in a laundromat for a couple hours. Remember that these are built for smaller, occasional loads that don’t require a full-sized machine.

Hand Wash

You can always go old school and choose to hand wash your clothes. This option might not be too bad if you’ll only be washing a few clothing items at a time and don’t mind waiting for them to finish hang-drying. If you have no other options and need to get some clothes clean, all you’ll need is a tub of water and some detergent.

Washer/Dryer Units

If you plan to be a full-time camper or close to it, then it might be worthwhile to invest in a washer/dry unit for your RV. It’s quite common for modern, luxury RVs to come with a washer/dryer hookup. You can choose between a stackable unit and a two-in-one combo unit. With a stackable unit, the washer and dryer are separate machines stacked vertically. With a two-in-one unit, the washer and dryer are combined into a single unit. Models like Splendide offer a machine that will wash your clothes and dry them immediately after.

Smaller Loads

It’s good to get into the habit of doing smaller, more frequent loads of laundry. Whether it be a portable washer, a stacked unit, or a combo machine, you’ll need to do smaller loads. Remember that these machines are smaller than the full-sized ones you’re probably used to. You won’t be able to let your dirty laundry pile up until you’ve got nothing left to wear. Get familiar with your machine and see how many clothing items can fit inside without overloading and plan around that. This may require doing laundry every couple of days, which may seem like a lot but it’s better than overloading your machine or waiting to do several loads at once and making it an all-day event.

Learning to do laundry on an RV can seem like a lot of work but once you find your groove and stick with it, it’ll be a breeze.
