Modern travel trailers and fifth wheels come in a huge variety of options and configurations, and deciding which one is right for you can depend on a variety of different factors.

Fifth Wheel or Travel Trailer?

The first practical decision to be made is how you want to tow your RV.  Travel Trailers are sometimes referred to as a bumper hitch, can come in small or large floor plans, and can be towed from any vehicle with the proper weight rating. Fifth Wheel RVs connect in the back box of a half ton or larger truck, have a “goose neck” look to them, and are often medium to large floor plans.

How much can you tow?

For safety and legal purposes, be sure to confirm the towing capacity of your vehicle before you decide on a new RV model. This will keep you from falling in love with something that is too large for you.

Where are you headed?

Whether you’re planning a cross country adventure, a trip south for the winter, or a seasonal site at the lake, your destination can impact what you need and want from an RV. If you’re on the move a bunch, something simple to set up and take down and easy to tow may be important. If your RV is going to be parked for a long period of time, or you plan to live in it for an extended period, you may want more space and amenities such as large closets or washer and dryer prep.

Who is coming with you?

The next thing to consider is who will be joining you on your RVing adventures. Once you know if you’re planning a road trip for two, or headed to a seasonal site for 8, this will affect the sleeping capacity, living space, and storage you need.

What amenities do you need?

Think about what your RV must-haves are, and what you’re willing to compromise on? Do you want one large bathroom with dual sinks or a bathroom plus a half-bath? Is having two campsite entrances important? Where do you stand with bunks, outdoor kitchen, or residential sized appliances? Whatever amenities you need from you RV will impact the floor plan that is right for you.
